I am sending announcement emails today!

Updated: Mar 11, 2023

I won't add much here, because there is a lot to read in the email text below. I am sending out this content to various stakeholders including, but not limited to, The Baden Storytellers' Guild, The St. Thomas Public Library, and local newspapers in St. Thomas and Waterloo. The sentence in square brackets will only be included for organizations that I am asking for help to promote the award.

Greetings. My name is Stephanie Holt. Oral storytelling became a part of my life in mid-2019. Since then, I have joined the Baden Storytellers’ Guild, Storytelling Toronto (ST) and Storytellers of Canada - Conteurs du Canada (SC-CC). In late 2022, I decided to attend the 2023 SC-CC Annual Conference in Sudbury. The Baden Storytellers’ Guild (BSG) nominated me for the Emerging Storyteller Award with Judy Caulfield, Co-Chair of the Guild, as my mentor.

When our Guild and mentorship pairing were chosen as one of the recipients, we committed to promoting the award. Any support from your organization in promoting this award will be greatly appreciated by everyone involved. If you are interested in receiving updates from me about this journey, please follow the link to my website and subscribe to my email list. Thank you.

Here, in bold, is a brief statement that can be shared easily: Storytellers of Canada – Conteurs du Canada (SC-CC) announced February 22, 2023 that Stephanie Holt (mentee), and Judy Caulfield (mentor), as nominated by The Baden Storytellers’ Guild (BSG), have been chosen as one of the recipients of the 2023 Emerging Storyteller Award. Stephanie will attend and perform at the SC-CC Annual Conference in Sudbury. They acknowledge Mary-Eileen McClear, founder of the Guild, for her inspiration and for her legacy of modeling mentorship.

Please see below the details of the award.

Storytellers of Canada – Conteurs du Canada (SC-CC) announced February 22, 2023, that Stephanie Holt (mentee), and Judy Caulfield (mentor), as nominated by The Baden Storytellers’ Guild (BSG), have been chosen as one of the recipients of the 2023 Emerging Storyteller Award. Judy Caulfield will continue to mentor Stephanie Holt leading up to the conference where Stephanie will perform the story they work on together. Under Judy's mentorship, Stephanie will grow as a storyteller.

As a member of the Baden Storytellers’ Guild, Stephanie, who lives in St. Thomas, Ontario, has discovered a love for oral storytelling. The Guild, based out of Waterloo, Ontario, focuses on developing an awareness of and appreciation for storytelling as well as an understanding of their role in the local and global storytelling communities that span across cultures. They emulate their founder, Mary-Eileen McClear, who exemplified the mentoring process for them. Stephanie, with the support of the team at St. Thomas Public Library (STPL), continues to bring attention to oral storytelling in the St. Thomas community.

The Emerging Storyteller Award includes:

  • Entrance to the conference.

  • $600.00 cash award as financial support to help cover the cost of the mentorship and travel costs.

  • Complimentary one year SC-CC membership for Stephanie.

  • Support to BSG, Judy and Stephanie in the form of advice and mediation as requested.

This award recognizes Stephanie's hard work to grow as an oral storyteller and understand her role in the larger storytelling community; work of the Baden Storytellers' Guild to support oral storytelling within the Guild and in the broader community; and the work done by the STPL team to bring attention to oral storytelling in the library and beyond.

In addition, the Baden Storytellers' Guild has agreed to provide:

  • Support to help cover the cost of Judy’s mentorship.

  • Funds from their Latitudes Festival donation (a donation made to BSG in memory of Derek Brisland to support storytellers, more on this in a later blog) to help cover travel costs.

  • Support to Judy and Stephanie in the form of advice.

Stephanie will:

  • Work with Judy to prepare her chosen story.

  • Cover any travel costs above and beyond the support from SC-CC and BSG.

  • Promote the award.

  • Share updates with stakeholders along the way.

  • Attend and perform at the conference.

  • Perform three additional times after the conference.

  • Work with Judy to create the final report for SC-CC.

  • Send the final report.

  • Provide notes to BSG to support the assessment on the program and results for SC-CC.

Judy will:

  • Mentor Stephanie as she prepares to tell a story at the conference.

  • Work with Stephanie on ideas and programs for Stephanie’s three additional performances after the conference.

  • Suggest to Stephanie ways to promote the award.

  • Work with Stephanie to create the final report for SC-CC.

  • Provide notes to BSG to support the assessment on the program and results for SC-CC.

Stephanie is grateful to SC-CC, The BSG, Judy Caulfield, STPL and the entire oral storytelling community for this opportunity to learn and grow as a teller. She is also eternally grateful to her husband and their two sons for their ongoing support as she pursues her passion for this incredible art.
